Nordic Design Twin Cities: Copenhagen and Stockholm
Sustaining Humanity, Sustaining Design
Abstract
Despite the harsh geographical conditions, Nordic countries have become synonymous with livability and happiness due to their good welfare systems, recyclable design products, and diverse cultural landscapes. The international reputation of Nordic design is closely related to the effort of Nordic designers on sustainable development. Besides being designers, they play multiple roles such as educators, scholars, and consensus builders. In line with the two major design concepts of environmental protection and human-centeredness in Nordic countries, Nordic design has reflected the basic principle of sustainability - intergenerational equity - in various aspects of life for several generations. Among them, Copenhagen in Denmark and Stockholm in Sweden, which are adjacent to each other, have played a crucial role in the development and growth of Nordic design. Meanwhile, as aggregative platforms for creativity, urban design weeks are important catalysts for their development. This paper aims to analyze how these two creative cities which are famous for their sustainable design, cultivate sustainable design concepts through their design weeks - Copenhagen Design Week and Stockholm Design Week - and provide useful references for future sustainable design practices in China.
