Abstract

Dubai is a world-renowned tourist city, and the country in which it is located, the United Arab Emirates, accumulated a great deal of wealth from its rich oil, mineral and other resources during its early development. However, the country's other resources (e.g. fresh water, forests, etc.) are in extremely short supply. In order to find more sustainable ways of development and to meet the deeper spiritual and consumer needs arising from the continued growth of tourism, the UAE government is supporting the development of cultural and creative industries in the country. Dubai, the second most populous city in the UAE and the second largest in terms of area, has paid particular attention to the development of creative and cultural industries and the role of innovative design in the economy in recent years, with the creation of Dubai Design Week being one of the key initiatives. Dubai Design Week is by far the most international and comprehensive exhibition in the Middle East. As Dubai's annual creative design exhibition, it has been given an important mission from the outset, providing an important force in the selection of talent for the UAE and the continued sustainable development of the country's cultural and creative industries. Despite its late start, Dubai Design Week has quickly become an influential design event in the Middle East and around the world, attracting designers and artists from around the world and aiming to bring Dubai into global dialogue through the power of design innovation to explore the future of humanity and sustainable development issues.
