Design for the Integration of Local Industries and Tourism

Abstract

The inheritance and development of traditional culture are integral components of cultural self-confidence and a crucial aspect of applying historical materialism in modern contexts. Consequently, an increasing number of creative industries are exploring the roots of traditional culture to empower innovation. The formation of a design week is closely tied to local industries. Regardless of the distance between the industry and design, the greatest impact of a design week is achieved by focusing on local industries. The Chiang Mai Design Week is a successful case of skillfully integrating local industries with creative industries. From the perspective of local supply, the design week not only brings about aesthetic and service changes but also serves as a platform that combines Chiang Mai's advantages in historical and cultural tourism to enhance the international market competitiveness of local industries.

This case report will focus on analyzing the local industries in Chiang Mai and examine how the Chiang Mai Design Week has transformed handicraft workers into the creative class of Chiang Mai. This report will also explore how design can take root in local industries, mutually promote progress with them, and generate a uniquely localized design style that advances the development of the design week.

In addition, the Chiang Mai Design Week is not solely dependent on local industries but also relies heavily on tourism. Based on the local industry's design week, the relationship between supply and demand is very close, and the local market cannot consume a massive supply. Thus, the tourism industry becomes a crucial entry point for the design week to enhance the international influence of local industries. Therefore, this article will combine the cultural tourism, industry, and design aspects of the Chiang Mai Design Week to provide new perspectives on the diverse design weeks in China, better seize the local industries, and reduce the homogeneity of the design week platform.
