Empowering Social Responsibility with Design: Facilitating the Social Innovation and Inheriting the Local Culture

Abstract

Since its establishment in 2009, Design Week Mexico (DWM) has been committed to creating an effective cohesion mechanism among Mexican cultural, educational, business, and communication institutions to promote the local design industry and the development of urban culture and innovation. In 2018, Mexico City was selected as the "World Design Capital" by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, reinforcing DWM's position as a leading design event in the region. As such, DWM continuously explores the challenges facing metropolitan areas in its own development process and views design and creativity as important driving forces for social progress and cultural development. Guided by this philosophy, DWM emphasizes its social responsibility and mission in platform development and continues to construct a sustainable development model for DWM in the areas of "creating a lifestyle platform," "nurturing emerging design," and "protecting and inheriting culture." Regarding "creating a lifestyle platform," DWM provides venues and spaces for designers, encourages professional designers, creative workers, and the public to explore the role of design in society, and promotes creativity and design as a driving force for sustainable development, driving continuous progress in society, economy, and culture. In terms of "nurturing emerging design," DWM leverages its platform advantages to integrate resources such as creativity, production, and communication through platform projects to create better conditions for emerging designers. Through exhibitions and other activities, emerging designers can expand their influence and gain professional recognition and awards, encouraging the new generation of designers to become an innovative force in society. Regarding "protecting and inheriting culture," DWM is committed to helping local craftspeople solve financial problems. By establishing a foundation that pools donations from cooperative institutions, DWM supports the revitalization of craft communities and maintains the value chain of local cultural production, thereby endowing "Mexican design" with greater sustainable vitality.
