Being Avant-Garde, Being Sustainable

Abstract

The development of Dutch design is closely related to the development of the Netherlands itself. The Dutch Golden Age laid the foundation for its rich artistic heritage and cultural identity. The Dutch Design Week (DDW) has been a powerful force in fostering talent, government support, and industry assistance in the Netherlands. DDW regards Dutch design not only as a label for specific designers or design aesthetics, but also as a reflection of Dutch culture and attitudes. DDW originated in 1998 as a design day for communication and collaboration between businesses and designers, and evolved into a festival-like event in 2002, officially renamed as the Dutch Design Week in 2005.

In line with their understanding of Dutch design, DDW showcases not only the aesthetics of design but also establishes its unique temperament through brand building. DDW stands out among many other design weeks with its sensitivity to international and social issues, its inquisitive approach to problem-solving, its commitment to sustainable development and green design, and its pursuit of practical solutions. Supported by numerous emerging design talents led by the Design Academy Eindhoven, seasoned and outstanding designers, as well as active feedback from local design enterprises, DDW has gradually become an important international design event that represents "ideological pioneers" and "designing the future".
