Abstract
Valencia, a city that embodies a diverse mix of cultures and design styles,
exudes a vibrant energy that is palpable in its designs. Its design has not only
redefined the city's image, as evident in the transformation of the old riverbed
of the River Turia into a lush greenbelt and public space. It has also promoted
the diversification of its urban industries. The enthusiasm of Valencian society
towards design and the citys comprehensive commitment to the design
sector have resulted in remarkable achievements in building the city's brand,
enhancing its charm, and integrating design into daily urban life.
This comprehensive strategy and practice of building a design capital
culminated with Valencia's designation as the "World Design Capital (WDC) in
2022 and its joining UCCN as "City of Design" in 2023. This milestone not only
recognizes Valencia's design excellence but also driven its design development
and international exchange in areas such as cultural heritage preservation and
public service enhancement.
The successful experience of Valencia teaches us that design is not
just the image and brand of a city, but also the engine and driving force for
its development. This case report delves into the strategies and practices
employed by Valencia in its comprehensive construction of a design capital,
presenting innovative initiatives and successful experiences in the field of
design through detailed data and case studies. It aims to provide valuable
insights and inspiration for other cities looking to emulate Valencia's example.
