A Postmodern Exploration of Design in China’s Leading City
Abstract
Shanghai was named as the "City of Design" by UCCN in 2010, the same
year it successfully hosted the World Expo. As one of China's most advanced
cities, where Eastern and Western cultures converge, it is one of the earliest
cities in China to adopt the concept of "design". In recent years, the creative
and design industries have gradually accounted for a larger share of Shanghai's
economy, helping the city break through the bottlenecks in economic growth.
In the process of building itself as a creative city, Shanghai has articulated
a design development strategy called "Four Integration" strategy. This strategy
outlines specific ways to incorporate design into various aspects of urban
development, providing clear direction for the city's creative development.
Since becoming UCCN City of Design, Shanghai has comprehensively
promoted its growth through a series of initiatives. These include establishing
and improving relevant policies, actively organizing design-related events,
focusing on talent cultivation, addressing citizens' needs, encouraging designrelated
businesses, and optimizing urban construction.
Today, Shanghai's ambition extends beyond merely being a Design City.
It aims to establish itself as the first-class Design City in the world, through
greater efforts in design. This goal is to enhance its international status and
become a shining design showcase for China on the global stage.
