Abstract

In 2021, Covilhã was named as "City of Design" by UCCN, which is the first city in Portugal to receive this title. It stands as a successful model for the transformation of traditional industries. Once a city with a textile industry as its foundation, Covilh􀆠 underwent the challenges of globalization and transformed its industrial structure from traditional manufacturing to modern high-tech and service industries.

Covilhã's design development strategy focuses on promoting the deep integration of handicrafts with modern industries, actively advancing sustainable development concepts, and strengthening community participation. This has gradually emerged design as a leading force in urban planning, cultural inheritance, and digital services. Through hosting creative week activities and creating innovative spaces, Covilh􀆠 has not only activated the pulse of urban cultural exchange but also injected new vitality into innovative collaboration, revitalizing the city's cultural and innovative atmosphere.

Through the leadership of design, Covilhã has achieved economic transformation and innovation, providing valuable experience for other cities with a single industrial structure to pursue sustainable development.
