China’s Gateway to Global Design

Abstract

Shanghai, a key birthplace of modern Chinese design, has a rich historical foundation and strong innovative vitality. Since being named a 'City of Design' by UNESCO in 2010, Shanghai’s design industry has rapidly developed. In recent years, the city has made remarkable achievements in industrial design, architecture, fashion, digital, and service design, showing robust growth.

Currently, Shanghai’s design industry is large and expanding rapidly. In 2023, the city’s cultural and creative industry reached 2.34 trillion yuan, with the design sector accounting for nearly 70%. Design industry-scale enterprises generated more than 294.48 billion yuan. Shanghai has established 21 national-level industrial design centers, 191 municipal-level design innovation centers, and 92 design-leading enterprises. Initiatives like the 'Shanghai Design 100+' selection led to over 250 billion yuan in design achievement sales.

Shanghai’s design industry stands out for its integration across diverse felds and international perspective. The industry spans industrial, architectural, fashion, digital, and service design, with felds developing synergistically. For example, in industrial design, Shanghai focuses on trends like electrifcation and intelligent networking, achieving breakthroughs in electric and new energy vehicle designs. Shanghai’s international influence is boosted through events like the World Design Cities Conference and Shanghai Design Week, exemplifed by the 2024 conference, which showcased 2,542 projects from 18 countries.

The growth of Shanghai’s design industry is strongly supported by government policies. The Shanghai municipal government has introduced several policies to foster development. The “Opinions on Building a World-Class ‘Design City’” aims to create a vibrant design ecosystem by 2025 and establish a world-class design city by 2030. This policy support is evident in the industry’s growth and the development of design talent. Shanghai has created national-level design zones, supported design research institutes, and built talent systems like the “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand” program to fuel continued growth.

With its diversified sectors, international vision, and robust policy support, Shanghai has become a benchmark for China’s design industry. With ongoing policy implementation and innovation, Shanghai is set to lead the global design sector, advancing from 'Design City' to 'World-Class Design City'.
