Shaping the Future with Design and Creativity
Abstract
Montreal, the cultural and economic center of Quebec, Canada, is renowned for its excellence in design and creativity. The 1976 Summer Olympics put Montreal on the international stage and marked the beginning of a transformation driven by design to enhance the city's economy. Since then, Montreal has continually made design a key part of its urban development strategy, leading to its designation as a UNESCO City of Design in 2006, becoming an international model for creative urban development.
Policies have played a pivotal role in fostering innovation in Montreal's design and creative industries. In 1991, Montreal became the frst city in North America to appoint a design offcer, laying the foundation for the application of high-quality design. The 2002 Montreal Urban Plan introduced the concept of 'big design', expanding design to encompass spatial, economic, and cultural domains. The 2019 'Montreal 2030' plan further emphasized design as a long-term driver of urban development.
Montreal’s design industry is highly innovative, often described as a 'City of Designers', with over 25,000 professionals in the field, representing 65.3% of the country’s design workforce. The economic impact of design on the city's cultural sector is significant, accounting for 34%. The city’s design ecosystem spans service design, industrial design, visual arts, digital media, and game design. Designers and planners contribute to the city’s vibrancy through innovative design practices. For example, the 'Design Quality Toolkit' offers digital tools and strategies for urban managers, architects, and designers, while the 'Montreal Business Design Program' promotes deep integration between business projects and design values, driving urban commercial innovation. Additionally, Montreal’s cross-disciplinary design development has led to iconic cultural and tourism projects. The MAD Arts Festival, attracting over 550,000 visitors annually, serves as a platform for local and international designers and artists to showcase their creativity. The 'Cité Mémoire' light installation, one of the world’s largest urban light installations, combines the city's landmarks with Montreal's historical stories, offering an interactive experience via a mobile app. The Quartier des Spectacles cultural and entertainment district fosters the city's creative economy through large-scale festivals and art galleries.
Through policy guidance, design industry innovation, and cross-disciplinary creative integration, Montreal has developed a city model where design and creativity drive urban development, enhancing both the quality of life and the economy.
