Abstract
Istanbul, as an important hub for economic and cultural exchanges in Türkiye, has made remarkable progress in sustainable urban development and the creative industries in recent years. In response to global challenges such as urban expansion, climate change, and resource consumption, the city has actively promoted green architecture, industrial design, and innovative urban planning to achieve a balance between environmental sustainability and economic growth. With its deep cultural heritage and an increasingly dynamic creative sector, Istanbul is steadily emerging as a leading city in global green design and sustainable development.
Istanbul has distinguished itself in the promotion of green architecture and sustainable urban planning. In recent years, urban planning authorities have strongly advocated green construction, sustainable design, and energy-efficient buildings, aiming to reduce energy consumption and enhance environmental quality. The government, in collaboration with private enterprises, has been actively driving ‘green’ projects to improve the ecological conditions of industrial and residential areas, expand urban green spaces, mitigate the heat island effect, and enhance the quality of life for residents. The optimisation of public spaces is also a key component of Istanbul’s sustainable urban planning. By incorporating innovative design concepts, the city has continually improved aspects such as urban aesthetics and public transport.
Istanbul's creative industries span multiple fields, including graphic design, urban planning, and product design. The government has supported the development of creative cities through policy incentives, dedicated funding, and international cooperation.
The issue of urban sprawl, driven by rapid urban expansion, has become a crucial challenge for Istanbul's sustainable development. To address this, the government has introduced urban transformation strategies that focus on rationalising functional zoning, optimising urban development models, and minimising unsustainable exploitation of natural resources. Additionally, Istanbul has strengthened its collaboration with international organisations such as the United Nations, integrating advanced sustainable urban management practices.
Looking ahead, Istanbul will continue to deepen the integration of green design and the creative industries, steering towards a more ecological and intelligent urban development model. The city also plans to enhance support for sustainable design, encouraging collaboration between design enterprises and educational institutions to nurture a new generation of designers with a strong awareness of sustainability.
