Abstract
Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, has become a cultural and creative hub in Southeast Asia through years of rapid development. By blending traditional culture with modern design, the city has driven industrial upgrades and transformation. Since becoming a 'UCCN City of Design' in 2019, Bangkok has increased its support for creative industries, integrating design thinking and green innovation into various aspects of urban development. The city not only focuses on boosting economic vitality but also leverages the synergy between culture and creative industries to promote sustainable growth.
Today, creative industries have become a vital part of Bangkok's economy, particularly in textiles, fashion design, architectural design, and cultural tourism. In 2020, the creative industries contributed around 5.7% of employment, and between 2018 and 2020, the sector's total value reached 1.5 trillion THB, accounting for 9.5% of Thailand's GDP. The city's creative industries combine traditional crafts with modern design while also encompassing architecture, fashion, and product design. The government has introduced several policies to promote this sector, including support for green architecture, sustainable development, and the integration of cultural tourism with creative industries.
The Creative Economy Agency (CEA) and the Thailand Creative & Design Center (TCDC) have played a key role in fostering innovation in Bangkok’s creative industries. CEA creates innovation platforms that connect creative talent, businesses, and manufacturing sectors, helping creative enterprises grow. TCDC, on the other hand, focuses on nurturing creativity across society by providing resources like business consulting and design thinking tools, as well as offering courses and workshops to cultivate young talent.
In terms of innovation, Bangkok has made signifcant strides. For instance, the renovation and revitalization of old neighborhoods have created vibrant cultural and creative districts, blending traditional landmarks with modern design to offer unique experiences to both tourists and locals. Additionally, the city has combined traditional industries with modern fashion, hosting exhibitions that showcase the innovative fusion of textiles, fashion, and cultural heritage. These initiatives not only enhance Bangkok's international infuence but also stimulate local economic growth.
