With the dynamic development of global socio-cultural and economic landscapes and the further advancement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the world's "Cities of Design" are shaping a new global pattern in this new era. As the first Chinese city to be awarded the title of "City of Design" by the United Nations, Shenzhen is also entering a new phase of development. Therefore, how Shenzhen, along with other Cities of Design worldwide, can shoulder the mission of this new era, leverage their unique positions, and build sustainable city brands is a key focus of this series of research projects.
This project is part of the "Sustainable Development Research Series for the World Design Cities" conducted by Dr. Han Han and her Team. Building on the foundation of previous series research (including the world's first “Sustainable Development Report for World City Design Weeks” published in 2023, the “Sustainable Development Report of the World Design Cities” released in 2024, and China's first “Blue Book of World Design Cities” to be published in 2025), this year's research focuses on the "industrial innovation" strategy within the broader design framework of the World Design Cities, culminating in this thematic report.
Preliminary case studies conducted by the research team across multiple networks related to the World Design Cities have revealed that "design + industrial innovation" plays a crucial role in the operational and future development strategies of cities within the World Design Cities networks. Additionally, the research found that over the past 3-5 years, new members applying to join or having joined the Design Cities networks have primarily pursued two main objectives: 1) cities seeking to use "design" as a strategic tool to bring new opportunities for the transformation and development of their traditional pillar industries, and 2) cities aiming to use "design" as a means to comprehensively expand their international influence and city branding.
Therefore, this year's research focuses on the interactive relationship between "industrial innovation" and "sustainable development", a topic that has long been of interest to international networks such as the World Design Cities and is particularly emphasized by cities that prioritize industrial innovation. Expanding on the three major international design city networks—the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) "City of Design," the World Design Organization's (WDO) "World Design Capitals" (WDC), and the World Design Week city network (WDW)—this project builds on the key research findings from over 50 representative cases worldwide in terms of application strategies, construction strategies, and future development strategies. By continuously updating and incorporating the latest data and employing open-source big data mining methods, the research team has conducted comprehensive analysis and comparative studies on keywords such as "design" "industry" "innovation" and "sustainable development" across these cities, resulting in this "Industrial Innovation" case report.
The report summarizes four strategic directions (corresponding to the four chapters of this report) for driving urban industrial innovation and sustainable development through design in over 50 representative Design Cities worldwide. Based on this framework, a case database of city development strategies, policies, actions and practices, and highlight projects has been constructed. It is hoped that through this series research projects and reports, ongoing exchanges and dialogues with the Design Cities worldwide will continue, jointly exploring innovative development directions and approaches for a sustainable future with the global community. Here we are exploring experience, sharing visions, to build creative cities, with design engines.
